Hello there! This is my first ever style post and it’s a topic I really want to dive into. Mainly because my goal with my blog is to help women live their lives intentionally, rather than on autopilot, and that includes giving thought to how we dress every day.
If you feel like you’re in a style rut, I put together these simple tips to help you dress better!
This isn’t about being dressed in the latest fashions or even changing the way you look to impress anyone. You absolutely do not need to do that! I really want you to dress in a way that makes you feel like your best YOU every day.
Sometimes, we just get so used to dressing a certain way, even if it’s not really how we want to dress. Life is so busy that we may not have even noticed that our clothes have become rather boring. And let’s face it, who has the time or money to do a complete closet overhaul on a whim?
Certainly not me!
First off. . .

1. TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR APPEARANCE
Your appearance matters. Having struggled with insecurity issues for all of my life, I can tell you that taking care of my appearance is an absolute must for me! How I dress every day has a direct impact on how I feel.
You see, when we put our clothes on every day, we get to decide who we want to be that day. It’s kinda like playing dress up. Only that it isn’t playing. It’s real life and we get to choose how we wish to present ourselves to the world that day and every day.
You can’t just roll out of bed, put on the easiest thing to wear and expect to look great in under 5 minutes. If you can do that and still look great, I’m utterly jealous!
Understand that taking care of your appearance has nothing to do with vanity, it’s about putting yourself first! I firmly believe that when you dress good, you feel good.
Taking pride in my appearance actually helps me feel like I’m showing up to live this life of mine every day. It helps me feel more in control of my day by being ready for whatever the day brings.
People make assumptions about me (by the comments I get) because I’m always dressed nice. I’m sure they think that I’m a big shopper and have nothing else to do but take all the time I need to get ready in the morning. Nothing is furthest from the truth.
I have three kids that go to three different schools so I’m always busy, but I wake up very early to workout, take a shower and get ready for my day.
And yes, I make an effort to dress well every day. Whether I’m staying home, going to the grocery store or picking up my girls from school.
I dress up every day for ME and I honestly don’t care if others think I’m vain or shallow because I know that I’m not!
And I don’t want you to care about how people perceive you, either.
If people want to judge you because you make an effort to dress up nice every day. Let them!
2. LOOK FOR INSPIRATION TO CREATE GREAT LOOKS
Rather than just picking clothes out at random, get clear about what sort of style you want to have for yourself. We all have a certain style we admire. Whether it be a certain fashion house (hello, Chanel!), a certain celebrity, a certain era. Or, maybe you like to dress according to what’s in style for the latest season.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF PINTEREST
I absolutely love Pinterest! It’s such a great platform that I go to for new style inspiration.
Create a new Pinterest board (you can make it secret if you want to so no-one else can see it but you) and start collecting the pins that showcase the style you want to have. This way, when you’re out shopping, you can easily look at the fashion and style pins you’ve collected to help you re-create a similar look.
Pinterest is such a great visual platform. I always see photos of women dressed in ways that I absolutely love but I might not have thought to style certain pieces together the way they have.
They can somehow seem to make even the most casual clothes look amazing, so it isn’t necessarily about dressing up. It’s about learning how to dress well no matter how casual or dressy you want to be. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different looks, either.
3. DEFINE YOUR STYLE
Now that you’ve looked for inspiration and have more of an idea about the style you want, start defining your style. To make the process a little easier, perhaps it would also be helpful to think of certain words that describe the look and style you want to go for.
Here’s a list of some of my favorite style words that may help you decide on the look you want to have much quicker:
Chic, Feminine, Modern, Classic, Girly, Fun, Fresh, Vintage, Pretty, Simple, Preppy, Elegant, Casual, Bohemian.
Do these words help you define your style? They do for me. My problem is that I can’t pick just one. It’s ok if you can’t, either!
Can you think of any other style words that would fit the look you want? Please share in comments and I’ll add them to this list 🙂
4. KEEP IT SIMPLE
I cannot stress the importance of keeping things simple. Keep your style simple and your clothing options simple.
If it takes you too long to figure out what pieces are going to go well together, or 30 minutes trying to figure out what you’re going to wear every day, it’s going to become a stressful task and you’re going to just want to grab the quickest thing to wear.
You can keep your style simple by eliminating layers wherever possible and eliminating too many patterned and bright colored clothing. Wear one or two-piece outfits like dresses, jeans and a top, or a skirt and a top.
Stick to more neutral toned clothing so you’re not having to spend too much time trying to figure out whether certain colors and patterns go together. Minimize accessories or go without if it’s not your thing. Keeping things simple means it’s more doable and you can be consistent when something is doable. Isn’t that a good thing?
When in doubt, simpler is always better!
5. DRESS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE
I don’t know about you, but there are just some things that I would love to wear, but they just don’t fit well or go with my body type. Like jeans and a t-shirt. Weird, isn’t it? But I just know my body type. T-shirts just don’t look good on me most of the time. Especially now that I’ve gained a whopping 25lb!
I wish they did because sometimes I want to dress casually and there are some cute t-shirts out there. But they’re just not very flattering on my body type. So, I wear jeans with more flowy tops or lace tops that look a bit more like dressed-up-casual.
Always dress in clothes that suit your body type. If you’re not sure, ask someone close to you that you trust and who can be honest with you and see what they think.
6. BUY CLOTHES INTENTIONALLY
If you want to look a certain way, you have to be intentional about every piece of clothing you buy and wear.
Don’t just buy clothes because they’re on sale and you don’t want to pass up a great deal. It can be tempting, but not worth it. Instead, buy clothes that reflect the style you want to have.
Grab a pen and paper, or the note pad on your phone and start writing down pieces of clothing that will match this new style you want to go for.
For example, if you want a more feminine look, perhaps adding more dresses, skirts and flowy tops will give you the look you want to go for. Floral tops with jeans that are paired with sandals or wedges are also a great everyday feminine look.
Whatever look you choose, start adding pieces of clothing that would help you tie that look together.
Think of your closet as an art gallery where you curate your best pieces.
I’m going to let you in on a simple but fantastic tip that will help you always look great. It’s actually my secret to always dressing well.
Ready for it?
Here it is. . .
If you don’t own old looking, ugly, faded, unflattering clothes then you can’t ever go out looking bad, can you?
You’re not going to ever forgo style for comfort when everything you have at least looks nice. Even casual clothes can look very nice if chosen and worn correctly, right?
This is such a simple yet effective tip to keep in mind.
I don’t personally own any old looking, weird, random pieces of clothing like old graphic t-shirts or faded old sweatpants, weird socks or even old flip flops. Period! I just don’t allow it. And that’s the number one reason why I always look like I’m dressed with style.
To be clear, having old clothes is not the same as having clothes that look old. I still have some clothes that I bought over 10 years ago, but they are still in brand new condition and they are still very much in style because they’re classic looking pieces.
This might be a bit painful, but consider cleaning out your closet. Clean out your closet and get rid of all old looking and unflattering clothes that don’t fit your new style.
If the piece of clothing makes you feel like less than your true self when you’re wearing it, get rid of it. As the saying goes, “out of sight, out of mind!”
I’m actually a bit of a minimalist when it comes to my closet, I don’t like to buy too many clothes. I like to buy versatile pieces that look classic with a modern twist.
8. CHANGE UP YOUR STYLE OFTEN
Although I think it’s great to have your own signature style. Don’t be afraid to change up your style every now and then. Remember that your style isn’t cast in stone. It should be fluid and ever-changing. We should never feel like we are bound by one style just because our everyday lifestyle doesn’t fit the style we want to have. We can change our style anytime we choose.
Have fun with it!
Dress up in one look one day and in a completely different look the next, if that’s what you choose.
There are no rules or limitations on style except for the ones you impose upon yourself.
Dressing the same way for years and years can be rather boring, so don’t be afraid of trying new things. You might end up loving it!
9. SET A NEW STANDARD AND MAKE A VOW
We all have very busy lives these days, so that’s why it’s so important to set a new standard for yourself. It’s so easy to fall back into old ways, even when the new way makes us feel a lot better.
This is for the ladies that are into fairytales, like me 😉
Put your right hand up and repeat after me. . .
I solemnly swear that I will never again buy, wear or keep ugly, faded and unflattering clothes for as long as I shall live!
Can you tell I’m a Harry Potter fan? Lol! It looks like I mixed in a bit of Harry Potter and a bit of marriage vows there, but it’s still a fun thing to do.
Go ahead and make a vow to yourself.
It’s the only way!
You deserve to show up fully for your life every day by dressing for your day, intentionally. Setting a standard for yourself will really help.
BEHIND THE SCENES OF THIS PHOTO SHOOT
My 15 year old daughter, Leila, is my photographer. I gave her the role and she kindly obliged and is even taking a photography class in school to help me take photos for my blog. Isn’t she wonderful?
I’ve been trying to get more comfortable posing in front of the camera. So far, I’m not doing a good job at it. Lol! But, I’m starting to learn to feel a bit more comfortable in my own skin and to just have fun with it!
This is me being blinded by the sun as I try to take a photo with this yummy looking cupcake. Sometimes, you’ve just got to laugh at yourself. Especially when you take weird photos, lol!
