I began making crostini about 16 years ago and they are still one of my favorite appetizers to make anytime I have guests coming over. Crostini are so simple to make and they taste delicious!
They also look so elegant just served on a white plate or cake stand. If I’m feeling extra creative, I’ll pick hydrangea leaves from my garden, wipe them down with a wet cloth to clean them, and then place them underneath the crostini. I love doing simple things like that to give food an extra special presentation!
What are Crostini?
Crostini means “little toast” or “little crust” in Italian. You can top crostini with just about any toppings you like. They make a perfect party food or family get-together appetizer.
What’s the Difference Between Crostini and Bruschetta?
If you’ve been to any Italian restaurant, you’ve most likely seen a tomato basil bruschetta on the menu.
Crostini are similar to Bruschetta and are sometimes confused as the same thing, but they are a little different: Bruschetta comes from the Italian word “Bruciare” which is translated as “to burn” or “to roast over coals.” It was a way to salvage stale bread by grilling it, then drenching it with olive oil and then rubbing garlic onto it for added flavor.
Bruschetta is a little more rustic and typically made with larger pieces of bread. Crostini tends to be made with smaller pieces of softer bread and the topping ideas are endless. They are also a little more elegant, in my opinion.
I still use the technique of rubbing garlic onto my crostini for that added layer of flavor.

Ingredients for Brie Cheese with Pear, Pecan and Honey Crostini
The ingredients in this recipe are a match made in food heaven!
Let’s go over our shopping list of ingredients for this recipe:
- French Baquette: For its glorious crust on the outside and softness on the inside.
- Brie cheese: It’s absolutely perfect in this recipe! Brie cheese has a very subtle cheese flavor and is just ooey-gooey goodness when it’s melted. If you’ve never tried brie cheese, then you’re in for a real treat!
- Forelle Pears: Are beautiful, slightly sweet, a little tender, yet crisp, and they complement the flavor of the melted brie cheese impeccably. If you can’t find Forelle pears, use any type of pear you like. Bosc pears or Bartlett pears will work nicely, too.
- Pecans: Add a slight crunch with an aromatic nutty flavor that goes perfectly in this dish. You can also use chopped walnuts, chopped pistachios or chopped almonds all work great, too.
- Liquid Honey: For sweetness and texture. It adds a depth of flavor that enhances all of the other ingredients and caramelizes the pears exquisitely. Use whichever liquid honey you desire. I’m using Raw Organic liquid honey.
- Garlic: It adds a savory layer of flavor. (optional).
- Butter: Helps to keep the bread a little moist in the center and adds a layer of buttery flavor.
Can I Make This Brie Cheese with Pear, Pecan and Honey Ahead of Time?
While you can make this crostini recipe up to one day in advance, it’s best to make it an hour or two before serving.
If you’re really pressed for time, I recommend making some components of this crostini recipe in advance and other components of it should be made up to a few hours before serving.
To make These Crostini in advance:
- Brie Cheese: Cut the brie cheese into small slices, put them on a plate in one layer (to avoid sticking together), cover with cling wrap and store in the fridge for up to one week.
- Pecans: Chop the pecans and place them into a zip lock bag. Store in the pantry or in the fridge until ready to use.
- French Baquette: Cut the baguette into small pieces, bake until golden brown, and rub with garlic while the bread is still warm. Once the bread has cooled, cover in cling wrap and keep in a dry place. Toast the baguette slices up to one day in advance.
- Forelle Pears: Will brown very quickly once they are cut, so they need to be sliced just before assembling and baking.
- Honey: Must be drizzled right before baking.
Forelle pears are cored and thinly sliced.
How to Make Brie Cheese with Pear, Pecan and Honey Crostini
Step 1: Using a serrated knife, cut the crusty baguette on the diagonal into 1/2- inch slices. Then transfer the baguette slices onto a baking sheet.
Step 2: Slice butter into thin pieces and place them on top of each piece of bread.
Step 3: Place the baking sheet into a preheated oven. Bake until butter is melted and baguette slices have turned slightly golden brown. About 5 minutes.
Step 4: While bread slices are still warm, cut the top off one garlic clove to expose the garlic juices. Then rub the cut side of the garlic onto each toasted baguette slice.
The warmth from the toasted baguette is going to allow the garlic to just melt into it. This is going to give the crostini a subtle garlic flavor that complements the other ingredients perfectly.

Step 5: Cut brie cheese into thin pieces and then place one on top of each baguette slice.
Step 6: Add a piece of Forelle pear on top of the layer of brie cheese and bread.
Step 7: Then sprinkle chopped pecans on top of each crostini.
Step 8: Drizzle honey on top of each crostini.
Step 9: Lastly, pop the baking sheet into the oven and bake until brie cheese has melted and crostini have become a golden brown. About 5-7 minutes.
After the Crostini Have Finished Baking
Remove crostini from the baking sheet immediately and then place onto a serving dish.
The pear will oxidize and change into a gorgeous caramel color the longer they sit. Personally, I love them more at this color.

- 1 baguette (preferably a day old)
- 10 ounces brie cheese sliced into 16 small pieces
- 2 Forelle pears (cored and sliced into 16 small pieces total (8 pieces each pear)
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans
- 1/3 cup raw organic honey (or any liquid honey you choose)
- 3 tablespoons thinly sliced Butter
- 1 clove garlic, peeled and cut in half
- Pre-heat oven to 400F and set aside a baking sheet
- Slice baguette on a diagonal and place each slice onto an ungreased baking sheet. Place a slice of butter on top of each baguette slice. If using melted butter or margarine, brush the top of each baguette slice with melted butter. Pop baking sheet into the oven and bake baguette slices until slightly golden brown.
- Remove baguette slices from the oven. Using the cut-side of a garlic clove, rub garlic clove onto each piece of warm baguette slices. It's important to do this while the bread is still warm so that it absorbs the garlic juices.
- Top each baguette with a small piece of brie cheese, a slice of pear, and top off with a sprinkle of pecans.
- Drizzle honey over each crostini.
- Pop the baking sheet into the oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until the brie cheese is melted and crostini look golden brown.
- Immediately remove each crostini from the pan and place on serving dish. This part is very important! Otherwise, the crostini will stick to the pan and will be hard to remove.
- You can melt butter and brush on top of each baguette slice if you find that easier than slicing the butter into small pieces.
- Must remove the baguettes from the baking sheet immediately after they're done as they will stick to the pan and will be hard to remove without breaking.
